Fela’s Daughter Reacts to Bishop Oyedepo’s Comment About The Temporary Closure Of Churches
There are different reactions to Bishop Oyedepo’s recent comment on the lockdown of churches due to coronavirus. In a recent sermon, Oyedepo expressed his opinion about the temporary closure of churches due to Covid-19. According to the cleric, he doesn’t understand the reason why markets will be allowed to open for six hours and churches won’t be allowed to open for just two hours. He stated that he smells a rat and he feels that the lockdown is an attack on churches. He noted that this pandemic period is the time for Christians to gather together to seek the face of God. Oyedepo’s opinion has been attacked by different people on social media. Some people were in support of his opinion while others felt he was been insensitive to the health of his church members. Commenting on this same issue today, daughter of Fela Kuti, Yeni noted that even the pastors should be concerned about their health. She countered Bishop Oyedepo’s opinion by stating that he can tell his members to pray to God in their homes at a particular time . She noted that there is no need for people to gather in a building because they want to pray to God concerning the pandemic. She emphasized that Christians can decide to do a prayer of agreement in their different homes and their prayers would still be effective. Yeni Kuti aired her view this morning on TVC's talk show-Your view.

Read what she said below:
“Church is not just about physical presence because when continue emphasizing on physical presence, the members can start questioning what they have even been taught in church about spirituality. We are saying that there is a virus, and if people gather in a particular place it would spread further. Let’s not forget the South Korean case that one person transmitted the virus to people in a church. Pastors can instruct their members to pray at a particular time against the pandemic and God will answer their prayers. Christians can pray in their houses and it would still be effective. What stops the pastors from coming together in one voice to pray together?
“I will share a personal experience on this. My aunty is very spiritual; so when there was a crisis in the family she made us- the family members to pray at a particular time for the problem to go away. We obeyed, and it worked. We overcame the problem, and we prayed this prayer of agreement in different parts of the world," she said.
Even though the main presenter of the show, Morayo Afolabi-Brown was not in support of Yeni Kuti’s comment, because she was of the opinion that pastors have the right to complain about the temporary closure of churches. Morayo was saying that if the markets are open for six hours and the churches are closed, it is counter-productive.
Well, honestly, this issue of churches being closed while the markets are open is a very controversial one because if we look at it logically, if the markets are open and churches are closed; it is actually arguable to say that it is counter-productive because in essence, churches are even more organised than the markets. However, the honest truth is that Christians can pray in their houses and God will still answer them but people still need to go to the market to buy food because they must eat. The church is actually the people and not a building.
