OYEDEPO: Corona Virus has exposed all of us.
OYEDEPO: Corona Virus has exposed all of us.
I have always told people that the world will not be the same again by the time the corona virus pandemic goes away. Sure, it will go away like the pandemics before it did. And back home in Nigeria, it will never be the same again. We have become wiser. Now we know that those we rely so much on are actually not thinking about us. The government, Religious leaders, Economic Managers etc.
Many religious houses have shown that they are Me and My Family Nig. Ltd. Remember that a Pastor sent out account numbers for tithe and offering while the lockdown lasted.
Political leaders know nothing about us and our needs while our marriage with our bank managers are "For Better for better, " if it becomes worse, they abandon us.
One of the most popular men of God in this country today is no doubt Bishop David Oyedepo. I mean, if you can build a 50,000 capacity auditorium church, you really merit attention. But of late, the man of God is sounding desperate that we are wondering if he is this keen about our meriting heaven or there is more to it.
Bishop Oyedepo
He has left many wondering if he is actually fighting for us, for God or for himself. Before now, when a man of God suffers insomnia (sleeplessness), he will say he stayed awake for our sake. When he suffers lack of appetite, he did not eat for our sake. When we pay tithe and offering, he helps God to spend it on our behalf. We were okay with all of these until corona virus came knocking. The world agreed that the best way to curtail the spread is social distancing and in special cases, self isolation.
Consequently, churches, schools and markets, the three major places that crowd gather at close quarters unmitigated were asked to shut down.
Health MinisterFirst daddy Oyedepo defied the order and conducted church service. He later apologised and we all forgave him. Then two weeks was extended to four, and then five. When eventually the lockdown was relaxed, religious houses and schools were asked to remain closed while markets were told to open on specific days.
Oyedepo was livid. He wondered why markets should be asked to open and other businesses can open while churches will not. Being an outspoken man, he spoke up, even threatening death on whoever stayed on his way. Wao. All this threats on our behalf? So that we can merit the Kingdom?
But many have wondered if the man of God is not indirectly calling church a business. To infer that other businesses and Market have opened and churches remain shut is partial meant that government should open church business as others have opened. Is it what it is?
Is the man of God losing a lot of revenue? Is he afraid that members might get wiser and get used to praying at home and still get results? If congregating together exposes us to higher possibility of getting infected and possibly dying, why is he not very concerned about our safety? Come to think of it, when the angel of death was in Egypt, God told the people of Israel to isolate themselves and stay indoors, that way, they were saved. Is this not angel of death on the prowl?
Why not press for schools to open as well? If school is reopened today, will you allow your child to go?
I tried to imagine what Christ would have done were he to be on earth at this time. As a selfless person, wouldn't our interest be more paramount to him. Did he not elect to die for us? Which man of God can die for me? They own jet planes while I don't have a bicycle, they live in mansions while we are ten in one room. They drink ogi (pap) with chicken while we soak garri for breakfast. They built schools with our money and make it unaffordable for us. Yet, on Sunday, I am always reminded that "those who put their faith in God shall have their strength renewed."
It is not only men of God. The more I think of a health minister who doesn't know how much is the hazard allowance of doctors under him earned, the more I realise the benefit of corona virus. Our eyes are opening. Who now told you that they know how much a bag of rice costs, or even a litre of petrol. Do they care about us? What of a bank that donated N1 billion and the next week penciled down more than half of its workforce for sack. Who really cares for us. This corona virus has really exposed us and still exposing.
