The Federal Government has disclosed that it would meet with states on Tuesday to discuss the modalities for the safe reopening of primary and secondary schools, according to a report by PUNCH

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about the shutdown of academic activities all over the country for over three months now. However, on Monday, the Federal Government directed the partial re-opening of schools for students that are to write terminal examination.

The Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, while making the disclosure on the re-opening of schools, noted that it was meant to allow pupils in graduating classes to resume preparation for examinations.

Although, some have applauded the Government for taking the right step in the right direction, others have knocked it for being insensitive and exposing both the students and teachers to danger.

Among those who have criticised the move are the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT), according to them, it was a wrong decision to make at this critical period.

However, a lot of states are yet to determine the exact dates to re-open schools in compliance with the directive of the Federal Government.

Some states like Ondo, Anambra, e.t.c have disclosed that they would not rush to re-open schools in a bid to avoid the risk of infections.

Other states like Ogun, Bauchi, Osun, Katsina as well as Edo have disclosed that despite the directive of government at the central, they are yet to decide on the modalities on school re-opening.

However, it is expected that when the proposed meeting between the Federal Government and the State Governments happen, such modalities on re-opening of schools would be discussed.

This latest development would come as a relief to many graduating students who have been eager to resume since the Federal Government directed the safe re-opening of schools.
