GEORGE FLOYD: Black People Built America for 400 years; I am Ashamed to be a White Man - NBA Coach
The popular 71 year old Popovich who is a three - time NBA coach of the year, and has won five titles with San Antonio Spurs said that he is "Embarrassed to be a white person" after watching the gruesome murder of George Floyd by the four police officers.
Popovich spoke with a senses of history and concern in a video that is posted on the official Twitter account of San Antonio Spurs with the inscription, "It's got to be us that speak truth to power, that call it out no matter the consequences. We have to not let anything go. Our country is in trouble and the basic reason is race."
Speaking in the video, Popovich pointed out how disheartening and disgusting it was to see the look on Derek Chauvin's face while he knelt on Floyd's neck nonchalantly with his hand in his pocket.
"In a strange, counterintuitive sort of way, the best teaching moment of this recent tragedy, I think, was the look on Chauvin's face... For white people to see how nonchalant, how casual, just how everyday going about his job, so much so that he could just put his left hands in his pocket, wriggle his knee around a little bit to teach this person some sort of a lesson, and that it was his right and his duty to do it, in his mind."
Popovich said it was repulsive to watch the "Lynching" of George Floyd, something he never thought he would see with his eyes in real time. The 71 year old legendary coach who is due to lead the U.S Basketball team to Tokyo Olympics, then made a Clarion call to the White people in America to now take the lead for Change. Sifting out historically, how the Black people in America have made sacrifices and worked hard for America's progress and yet are made to shoulder the burden of Racism.
"The only reason this nation has made the progress it has, is because of the persistence, patience and efforts of black people... The history of our nation from the very beginning in many ways was a lie, and we continue to this day, mostly black and brown people, to try to make that lie a truth so that it is no longer a lie. And those rights and privileges are enjoyed by people of colour, just like we enjoy them. So it's got to be us that speak truth to power, that call it out no matter the consequences. We have to speak, we have to not let anything go. Our country is in trouble and the basic reason is race."
